HIU Announces Closure of Nebraska Christian College

By Jim Nieman Nebraska Christian College will close at the end of this semester. The announcement was made this afternoon after a decision by the Hope International University board of trustees. HIU and NCC had merged in 2016. “To give you an idea of our current challenge, our spring enrollment there [at NCC] has fallen to under 90 students, which is the lowest in 30 years,” said Paul Alexander, president of the combined university, via a video posted at NCC’s website. “The number of students required to cover our costs there is just about 200. Joneses to Step Down from Leadership Roles at Stadia (Plus News Briefs)

Compiled by Jim Nieman and Chris Moon Tom and Debbie Jones plan to step down from their leadership roles with Stadia Church Planting and Bloom, respectively, on Jan. 1, they announced via Facebook. However, both will remain with Stadia as special assistants to the president. Tom Jones has served as executive director of Stadia since its founding in 2003. Debbie Jones founded and serves as senior director of Stadia’s Bloom, which empowers women to maximize their role in starting churches. Church Finds Time Capsule, Restocks It (Plus News Briefs)

Compiled by Chris Moon and Jim Nieman Central Christian Church in Portales, N.M., discovered a 60-year-old time capsule while expanding its building. As contractors removed a plaque that marked the cornerstone of the building, they discovered a Bible, a copy of the local newspaper from 1958, a church bulletin, and a history of the church written by then pastor Glen E. Hull. The Eastern New Mexico News tracked down Hull, 86, who now lives in Florissant, Mo., with his wife of 62 years, Inez. CCC was Hull’s first ministry. “You always go back to your first ministry. Milligan Changing Alcohol Policy (Plus News Briefs)

Compiled by Chris Moon and Jim Nieman Milligan College is loosening its alcohol policy for students. In a letter to the university community, Milligan president Bill Greer announced the campus would remain dry, but “rather than restricting off-campus alcohol consumption among all traditional students, the college’s new policy allows our students to respect state law in terms of the legal age of consuming alcohol.” Greer wrote that the new policy demonstrates the university’s trust in students and allows them to learn personal responsibility as it pertains to alcohol use. “I can’t stress enough that the reason behind me recommending this policy change

TCM Now Offering Classes for U.S. Students (Plus News Briefs)

TCM, which was founded in 1957 and began offering classes at its TCM International Institute in Austria in 1991, is now offering learning opportunities in the United States. “We are not slowing down our ministry in Eastern Europe or Central Asia in any way,” said David Roadcup, global outreach representative with TCM. “We are just adding the U.S. to our ministry, as well as other countries to which the Lord might be leading us.” Stateside course instruction will consist of three months of online work followed by three days of face-to-face lectures and discussion. By Chris Moon 5-Year-Old Signs Basketball National Letter of Intent Milligan College’s latest basketball recruit is young—very young. The Tennessee school last fall brought 5-year-old Eli Roberts to campus to sign a National Letter of Intent to play on the school’s basketball team. Eli, who was diagnosed with cancer at birth, is the son of a Milligan College graduate. “Eli signed a letter of intent, which means he’s part of our program,” said Milligan basketball coach Bill Robinson in a story published in the college’s alumni magazine. “It’s the coolest signing I’ve been a part of, that’s for sure.”
