As we come to the Lord’s Table today, let’s reflect on something beautiful unfolding in our world—something unexpected, yet deeply hopeful. We’ve often heard the story of young people heading off to college, particularly public universities, and drifting away from their faith. It’s a narrative that’s been repeated so often it feels like an inevitability. But lately, we’re seeing a different story emerge, one that stirs the soul and points us back to the power of God’s Spirit moving among us.
Across college and university campuses—places like Asbury, Auburn, Texas A&M, The Ohio State University, and others—students are gathering, not to turn away from faith, but to run toward it. Revivals are breaking out, sparked by the hearts of young people hungry for something real, something eternal. They’re singing, praying, confessing, and stepping into the waters of baptism, publicly declaring their faith in Jesus Christ. What the world might expect to be a desert for faith is becoming a wellspring of renewal.
This table before us—this bread and this cup—tells a story of renewal, too. Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, broke it, and said, “This is my body, given for you.” He took the cup and said, “This is my blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins.” It’s a moment that looked like defeat, like the end of hope, but it was the beginning of the greatest revival the world has ever known—a revival of life over death, of grace over sin.
These students, standing in dormitory chapels or beside makeshift baptismal pools, are stepping into that same story. They’re not losing faith; they’re finding it, claiming it, living it. And as we take this bread and drink this cup, we join them. We’re reminded that the same Jesus who met fishermen by the sea, who called tax collectors and sinners to follow him, is meeting students in lecture halls and late-night study sessions. He’s meeting us here, too.
So as we partake, let’s give thanks for this revival—for the courage of these young people to say “yes” to Christ, for the waters of baptism washing over them, and for the Spirit that refuses to let go of any corner of this world. And let’s pray that this renewal spreads, from their campuses to our hearts, until every place—every college, every home, every life—becomes a place where faith is found anew.
